Proper Storage

How you store your crystals affects both their physical condition and energetic clarity. Thoughtful storage prevents scratches, chips, and breakage while keeping energies pure and organized.

Storage by Hardness

The Mohs hardness scale (1-10) determines which crystals can scratch others. Harder crystals will scratch softer ones if stored together carelessly. Diamond is 10 (hardest), talc is 1 (softest).

Soft Crystals (Mohs 1-5)

Store separately in individual pouches or compartments

  • • Selenite (2) - Extremely delicate
  • • Calcite (3) - Scratches easily
  • • Fluorite (4) - Can chip on corners
  • • Malachite (3.5-4) - Soft and porous
  • • Apatite (5) - Moderate hardness

Hard Crystals (Mohs 6-10)

Can be stored together but avoid stacking

  • • Quartz varieties (7) - Durable
  • • Amethyst (7) - Handle points carefully
  • • Topaz (8) - Very hard
  • • Sapphire/Ruby (9) - Extremely durable
  • • Diamond (10) - Hardest mineral

Storage Solutions

Fabric Pouches

Soft velvet, silk, or cotton pouches protect individual crystals from scratches and keep them energetically separate. Ideal for carrying crystals or storing delicate specimens.

Compartmentalized Boxes

Jewelry boxes with divided sections keep crystals organized and separated. Look for velvet-lined versions to prevent scratching. Great for tumbled stone collections.

Display Cases

Glass or acrylic cases protect crystals from dust while allowing you to enjoy them visually. Position away from direct sunlight for color-sensitive stones.

Natural Materials

Wooden boxes, wicker baskets, or natural fiber containers work well and are believed to maintain positive energy. Avoid synthetic materials that may carry static.

Storage Best Practices

  • • Keep crystals away from extreme temperatures and sudden temperature changes
  • • Store away from electronics that emit EMF (some believe this affects energy)
  • • Consider storing cleansing crystals like Selenite with your collection
  • • Keep delicate points and clusters padded or displayed where they won't be knocked

Cleaning Methods by Crystal Type

Physical cleaning removes dust, oils, and environmental residue. This is separate from energetic cleansing (covered in our cleansing guide). Always research your specific crystal before cleaning, as some methods can cause permanent damage.

For Water-Safe Hard Crystals

Quartz family (Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz), Jasper, Agate, Carnelian, and Tiger's Eye can safely be cleaned with water.

  1. 1. Run lukewarm (not hot) water over the crystal
  2. 2. For stubborn residue, use a soft brush (like a baby toothbrush)
  3. 3. For deeper cleaning, soak briefly in room temperature water with mild soap
  4. 4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue
  5. 5. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
  6. 6. Allow to air dry completely before storing

For Water-Sensitive Crystals

These crystals should never be cleaned with water. Use dry methods only.

  1. 1. Use a soft, dry brush to remove dust gently
  2. 2. For light film, buff gently with a microfiber cloth
  3. 3. Use compressed air for hard-to-reach crevices
  4. 4. For stubborn spots, dampen (not wet) a cloth with distilled water and spot clean
  5. 5. Never submerge or let water pool on the surface

For Porous Crystals

Porous stones (like Turquoise, Opal, and Pearls) absorb liquids and can be permanently stained or damaged.

  • • Avoid all liquids including cleaning solutions
  • • Keep away from perfumes, oils, and cosmetics
  • • Clean only with soft, dry cloth
  • • Store in dry conditions to prevent humidity damage

Never Use These on Crystals

  • • Harsh chemical cleaners or bleach
  • • Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners (can shatter fragile stones)
  • • Steam cleaners (extreme heat damages many crystals)
  • • Abrasive scrubbers or steel wool
  • • Hot water (causes thermal shock and cracking)

Sun-Safe vs Sun-Sensitive Crystals

Sunlight fades many crystals over time. The UV rays break down color-causing elements in the crystal structure, causing vibrant colors to become pale or completely bleached. Even brief daily sun exposure through a window can cause gradual fading over months or years.

Sun-Sensitive Crystals (Avoid Direct Sunlight)

Amethyst

Purple color fades to gray or clear

Rose Quartz

Pink color becomes pale or white

Citrine

Yellow color may fade

Smoky Quartz

Brown color lightens significantly

Fluorite

All color varieties will fade

Kunzite

Pink color extremely light-sensitive

Aquamarine

Blue color may fade

Celestite

Blue color fades quickly

Sun-Safe Crystals

These crystals can tolerate sunlight and may even be charged by it:

Practical Tips

  • • Display sun-sensitive crystals away from windows or use UV-filtering glass
  • • Brief morning or evening sun (under 1 hour) is safer than harsh midday light
  • • If charging in sunlight, limit to 15-30 minutes maximum
  • • When in doubt, use moonlight instead - it's safe for all crystals

Water-Safe vs Water-Sensitive Crystals

Water can dissolve, rust, or damage certain crystals. Understanding which crystals are water-safe is essential for cleaning, cleansing rituals, and making crystal elixirs. When in doubt, avoid water.

Water-Sensitive Crystals (Never Use Water)

Selenite

Dissolves in water - extremely fragile

Malachite

Releases copper when wet - toxic

Pyrite

Rusts and may release sulfuric acid

Hematite

Rusts when exposed to moisture

Lepidolite

Flakes and deteriorates in water

Fluorite

Can become dull and cloudy

Azurite

Soft and water-reactive

Kyanite

Layered structure absorbs water

Water-Safe Crystals

The quartz family and other hard, non-porous crystals are generally water-safe:

Crystal Elixir Safety

If making crystal elixirs, only use the indirect method (crystal outside the water) unless you've confirmed your crystal is both water-safe and non-toxic. Some crystals release harmful substances into water. Visit our crystal elixir guide for safe methods.

Traveling with Crystals

Many crystal lovers travel with their stones for protection, comfort, or continued spiritual practice. Proper packing ensures your crystals arrive safely at your destination.

Best Crystals for Travel

Travel-Friendly Forms

  • Tumbled stones - Rounded, durable, pocket-sized
  • Crystal jewelry - Wear your crystals safely
  • Small palm stones - Fit easily in bags
  • Avoid: Raw clusters, points, or fragile specimens

Packing Tips

1

Wrap Individually

Each crystal should be wrapped in soft cloth, tissue paper, or bubble wrap. This prevents crystals from scratching each other.

2

Use Padded Cases

A dedicated jewelry case, eyeglass case, or small padded pouch works well. Hard-shell cases offer extra protection.

3

Carry Fragile Crystals On-Board

If traveling with valuable or delicate specimens, keep them in your carry-on where they won't be thrown around.

4

Consider Temperature

Avoid leaving crystals in hot cars or cold conditions. Extreme temperatures can crack some stones.

5

Airport Security

Crystals are allowed through airport security. Larger geodes or dense stones may be inspected - pack accessibly if concerned.

Long-Term Care

With proper care, crystals can last indefinitely and even be passed down through generations. Here are practices to maintain your collection over the long term.

Regular Maintenance

  • • Dust displayed crystals weekly with soft cloth
  • • Deep clean water-safe crystals monthly
  • Energetically cleanse after heavy use
  • • Rotate displayed crystals to prevent sun damage
  • • Inspect for chips or cracks periodically

Environmental Factors

  • • Keep humidity moderate (40-60%)
  • • Avoid placing near heating vents or AC
  • • Protect from smoke and cooking fumes
  • • Keep away from chemicals and cleaning products
  • • Position away from high-traffic areas

When Crystals Chip or Break

Sometimes despite best care, crystals get damaged. Many practitioners believe broken crystals have simply completed their purpose or absorbed negative energy on your behalf. Options include:

Return to Earth

Bury the pieces in your garden as a gift back to the earth

Repurpose

Use pieces in crystal grids, planters, or craft projects

Continue Using

A chipped crystal still holds energy - it may just look different
